The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance Presidents' Forum 2018 was held at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou on July 9, offering a chance for heads of universities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to discuss cooperation in talent training and sci-tech innovation.

The alliance was launched by Sun Yat-sen University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Macau. It has 28 members including 12 from Guangdong province.

Jing Lihu, head of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, spoke at the forum. He said that the department has been carrying out exchanges with the education departments of Hong Kong and Macao to fully tap the potential of higher education cooperation in the Greater Bay Area. The intention is to solidly promote the construction of a world-class university cluster with Chinese characteristics to provide talents for a world-class urban agglomeration in the Greater Bay Area.

Luo Jun, president of Sun Yat-sen University, remarked that the establishment of the alliance reflects the common aspiration of all the universities in the Greater Bay Area to serve the country's innovative development. He added that since its inception the alliance has been focusing on serving the country and has started work in an orderly manner around the two main aspects - talent cultivation and technological innovation.

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Supercomputer Alliance was also founded at the forum. As a joint institution led by the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou and other universities, the alliance will bring together super-computer application institutions to promote the development of such applications, cultivate super-computer software development and talents, and facilitate the construction of sci-tech innovation centers in the Greater Bay Area to deepen cooperation in super-computer application development.
